The amount of food/electricity and room to house all those rays would make a researcher go broke. Easier to study preserved species that don't require any maintanence aside from a dip in the formaldehyde

the things that the article said that characterises the rays the most was the skeletal structure muscle structure and pore arrangement. Hard to look in detail if the specimens were live. You need to disect them.
