the things that the article said that characterises the rays the most was the skeletal structure muscle structure and pore arrangement. Hard to look in detail if the specimens were live. You need to disect them.

wow-ive never seen so many dead rays. looks like he is spearing them out. is it me, or does that original pic look photoshopped? the rays in it look photoshopped into the pic.. guess its just me-they look weird.
