Four foot tall tank - Too tall? Or just right?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't have a steel hookup. Maybe I should look into it though. Something like that could still be wrapped in my wood plan, especially since the piece itself is larger than the tank footprint, to make room for the screen.

What I was thinking was that I'd have the 2x4 skeleton bearing all the weight at 72x24, but the actual furniture footprint would be more like 82x28-30, with the excess being made up of 3/4" maple or walnut ply. That out to provide a lot more lateral stability so it doesn't get tempted to rock forward if a dog knocks into it or something. Unlike my 220, which wobbled all over before I reinforced the stand that came with it...

I found a welder on craigs list. I got the tubular stock metal to him. The metal was $80 I think, and the welder was $100. I've seen a few stands on here with metal frames and wood shells. It works great. The 2X4 plan will work fine also and should be a lot cheaper.

My tank is 46in tall , still a work in progress.

I tried making some DIY gravel cleaner it was a PITA. I bought a 48in python for around $20 bucks online works much better.

I am running 2 x 36w UV to decrease any alage growth on glass

For lighting I have 2 Quad 36in T5s and
2 double 48in T8 strips.

I used 2x6 and 4x4 for stand construction.

Filtration I have a Reeflow Hammerhead, 100 gal rubbermaid sump, 2x 100-50 micron socks, Ultima II 1000, 3 Ocean clear canisters.

I have a drip system but it is currently off. I accidently left my drain closed afer backwashing the ultima and the drip system overflow my sump while I was OOT.

I have spent the last few weekends taking up carpet, laying new flooring, and painting.

IMO tall tanks are MUCH more work than similar size tanks shorter in height. whether or not it is worth the extra effort is up to the individual.

+1 on the tall tanks.

I went from 125g @24" to 240g@30" to now 450g@48" and all I can say is the height adds such a different element to viewing. People complaining about tanks being too tall are probably people who complain about everything, it is what it is.
