I put what I thought were two female marbled convicts in my community aquarium. I noticed a day or two later that they were getting very aggressive towards everyone in the aquarium, so I moved one out. I left the smaller one in, and she continued to lord over her corner of the aquarium to the point where I was going to move her out today. I went and got the net and I see a swarm of babies. Unbelievable. They were only in there together for 2-3 days at the most.

Other tankmates include Geophagus altifrons, Geo sp red head, A. heckelii, bunch of EBJDs, plecos, and kuhli loaches. Do the fry have a chance? The convict is by far the smallest in the tank.

I also have a 20 gallon where they bred, and they have fry, but they are about 2 weeks old. Do you think I could mix the fry together? Or would the father kill the new fry?

They'll probably become food real quick, once they become more adventurous.
In about 2 weeks the parents will probably start picking them off.
If possible move and seperate or use a breeder net in the 20gal, until the new lil ones are about 2 weeks old and try to mix.

If you do use a net, keep an eye out to see if the older fry is attempting to eat the new fry through the net. I made that mistake with the parents, they attempted to re-collect 5 fry i took from them through the netting. shredded zebra.

Mine went from real dark to washed out during breeding. Those guys will probably darken as time goes on with good nutrition.
I just peeked in my tank.. bunch of eggs! the cycle continues..

I do have a breeder net, I was thinking about putting them in there. BTW, they are marbled/calico convicts which is why they are so light.

BTW, they are about 6" away from a FX5 intake!

I just cut some coarse aqueon sponge and threw it on the intake. Like I said just keep an eye on the netted youngins and don't net them in the same tank as the parents.

the real question is do you want the fry to survive... they are going to breed like every 4 weeks or so now...

Sure, they can survive as long as they don't harass my other fish. It should take a lot longer than 4 weeks for them to get to sexual maturity. There is only one adult convict in the aquarium now.

I got a question, when the convicts lay eggs should you take out the eggs or wait till they hatch to remove them and put them in another tank.
