Nope, it is a legality issue as well. However, in the thread you referenced, the argument was morality, not legality....

How so, exactly? Just because the act had already been committed doesn't negate its illegality.

so are all you people saying you would never own a illegal reptile, fish or any other kind of animal ??

if so your a lier i have had tons of illegal reptiles in my life the ones you cant have are the best ones lol

Can't speak for everyone else, but I can proudly say I have never kept any animal illegally. As much as I hate some of these silly laws, simply breaking them isn't the answer. In fact, it makes the entire hobby look bad as a result. For every selfish idiot caught, it feeds the impression that all reptile keepers are willing to break the law to satisfy themselves. A very wrong impression, I know, but thats the world we live in, folks.

So for you childish and selfish brats out there, try looking at the bigger picture before you make such idiotic decisions....OK?!?!

How so? Because....thats what we were debating there? You can't bring up a thread as "evidence", and manipulate what the argument was about. The thread you brought up dealt with MORALS, this thread is dealing with LEGALITY. I don't see what the big deal is....

I took the liberty of copying and pasting some quotes from the thread, in case you forgot what the argument was about...

"Stealing is stealing.

Why is this a poll? I'm not trying to be a jerk, but this is basically a poll asking people what their moral's are.

That being said, I could care less what you did. I know what I would have done.... "

"I voted to return it. Sorry but I disagree with what you did. Just my opinion."

"
My point is: Why is their a poll? Are you trying to justify stealing? This goes back to what I was saying about morals....

I don't want to open up a can of worms, b/c I would hate for your thread to get closed.... "

"I voted to return it. Would have been tempted to keep it, but I'm always scared of karma coming back to bite me....."

"I would have returned it as I am not into snakes myself

however I do see the other side to it-

if the store permitted it to get loose, its their fault- the snake could have died- a good reasoning why you should have kept it "

"i think its legit seeing as the snake was obviously not being cared for properly. i would have been like ay i found this snake in the bathroom its mine now ur too irresponsible to care for it while im around but atev the poll is kinda wack because like rmorse said its morals and everyone is different...
but takin the snake was a good move i think "

My personal favorite: (This one is from you)

"Bet you wouldn't feel that way if you had lost your wallet. "

How can you say that you were not arguing morality, rather, you were arguing legality?

You can't. That entire thread revolved around whether or not it was moral, not whether or not it was against the law.

Last quote, I promise....This one sums up the point of the thread pretty good.

"I doubt a store would permit their stocks to roam around loosely. Even if the snake is not in good health, it still does not justify your action to steal it without permission from the owners. Stealing is dishonesty. Dishonesty is immoral. Regardless of your excuse, at least return the snake and explain properly what happened."

Are you implying that you have never broken the law? To me, keeping a ball python in NYC is no different than speeding, jaywalking, etc.... There is no way anyone on this board has not driven a little faster than the speed limit when in a hurry (unless you are one of the under 17 crowd on this site). If you are a responsible herp owner, there is no harm in keeping a ball python in NYC. The law was made for the jackasses that walk amongst us on a daily basis. Unfortunately, some laws are made because of a few dummies, and the responsibles people are the ones who suffer.

I refuse to suffer at the hands of "The Man"

Yes, you are correct in saying both are crimes.....but whenever someone is caught speeding or jay-walking, it isn't over-dramatized in the media, which ostracizes anyone who walks or drives a car. You don't see headlines "Man Caught Going 5 MPH over Limit."

But if someone is caught illegally keeping a snake (any snake), thats exactly what happens and reflects badly on the herp community as a whole.

Oh and cut it out with the "V for Vendetta" quotes. Grow up, children.
