Whats this otohime stuff?

I first posted about Otohime food on MFK several yrs ago, before anyone here had even heard of it. This was also back when I was still selling fish food myself. Hmmmmm, whatever was I thinking?

It's a Japanese based farm feed. Below is a more recent post on this food.

I have posted about Otohime as a lower cost alternative feed in the past when folks were looking for ways to lower their food bill. Overall a decent farm feed, but it seems as though once you get past their 2mm pellet in size, the lower the quality in raw ingredients. This is the ingredient list for their 10 mm pellet. Fish Meal, Wheat Flour, Tapioca Starch, Corn Starch, Potato Starch, Fish Oil, Calcium Phosphate, Soy Meal, Wheat Germ.

I can't say that I can get too excited about feeding wheat, tapioca, corn, potato, soybean, and more wheat, to a food designed for fish, and certainly not for fish that are considered non herbivores. Like most Japanese based food, it seems to be designed more for Koi than anything else.

Overall when it comes to farm feed you tend to get what you pay for.

I also posted the following in the recent and now locked pellet discussion. It was in response to some members that were looking for some less costly alternatives, compared to some of the premium brands. I haven't looked at it in a few yrs, so the formulas may or may not have changed.

If I was looking for a lower cost alternative I would consider feeding half of a premium brand such as NLS, and half bulk commercial farm feed. I think a reasonable compromise for those that want the best, but can't always afford it.

Randy Reed appears to have a decent looking product that on the surface certainly appears to be reasonably priced.

Granule size, up to 10mm. 20 kg (44 lb's) for $135.00 plus shipping.

Krill Meal, Fish Meal, Squid Meal, Wheat Flour, Potato Starch, Corn Starch, Fish Oil, Calcium Phosphate, Betaine, Soy Lecithin, Licorice Plant, Wheat Germ.

Made in Japan by Marubeni Nisshin Feed Co., Ltd.

They have another formula, but it doesn't appear to come in larger pellet sizes.

Krill Meal, Fish Meal, Squid Meal, Fish Oil, Haematococcus, Wheat Flour, Potato Starch, Corn Starch, Calcium Phosphate, Betaine, Soy Lecithin, Licorice Plant, Wheat Germ.

While the first formula is missing out on aquatic plant matter (algae meal/spirulina), both foods appear to have decent quality sources of protein (krill/fish/squid), and both formulas are relatively high in both protein & crude fat, so one could most certainly feed fairly sparingly. I would reckon that their vitamin/mineral levels are at industry minimums, so while not at the level of a food such as NLS, probably not way off the mark either. Most likely very similar to other bulk commercial foods. But this is why I would only feed it as a partial supplement food.

I've never used that product line so cannot personally vouch for its quality, but on the surface it looks to be a LOT better than Purina, and most of Kens formulas too. Ken simply buy food in bulk, and repacks it with his labels & name.

K a few members feed it. Doesnt look like the best ingredient list but pretty damn economical if purchased in the 22 or 44lb bags. Buddy is sending some this week.

I cant post the link for some reason.

If this doesnt work i can text it to you.

I might have seen it and since forgotten about it.

I feed dried anchovies as a treat and my fish love them...especially my aro. I also mix in freeze dried mealworms to my fish but they’re too small for my aro now. Freezendried crickets were ignored.

I never knew freeze dried anchovies were a thing lol. I'll have to ask my wife where i can find some. So far my little guys love the FD crickets but my lord do they stink. Oddly no one likes the meal worms. Wont even touch them

They are dried and sold at Korean markets. You’re in DE right? Closest store is in Upper Darby in PA. It’s called H-Mart

I feed my aros with zeroyoyo freeze dried roaches, it helps when my aros go on a hunger strike. its a bit messy but its better than handling live ones.
