Hey guys, trying to prove a point. I know freezing your still alive fish with no anaesthesia is a really slow, painful way to go for the fish, I remember reading something on here about it a while ago but I can't find it. Some of my family seem to think freezing them is the most humane thing you can do and that they ''just go to sleep like humans do''. I know they don't, can anyone clear it up for me, give me some facts?
IMO If I have a sick fish that I know is not going to make it, I can't ever bring myself to hammer them so its straight into boiling water they go, its a a split second death for small fish.

For small fish yes, the boiling method would definitely work better than the freezing method...

The freezing method i've heard works best with fish such as Koi, who naturally live in colder waters and suppsedly do goto sleep below a certain temp...

Another method you could consider is clove oil, enough clove oil mixed into a buck of tank water will put the fish to sleep, overdose a little more and it will kill it peacefully...

By far my darkest aquarium, and definitely a learning, moment for me: Once one of my friends was willing to flush a Dempsy that was definitely going to die and just suffering, and I let her do it, but it didn't go down. I went in to make sure about 5 minutes later and it jumped back up out of the toilet at me. I went and filled a tupperware container to about 4" with cold water, threw a whole bag of ice into it from the freezer, got the fish out of the toilet, threw it in, and it was pretty fast.

The fish did definitely go through some suffering, but it wasn't prolonged. It wasn't conscious for more than about 15-30 seconds once it was in with the ice. The last movement it made was a final big jump, and it almost made it out of the container onto my floor, then nothing. I let it sit there for about another 5 minutes motionless before I threw it down the garbage chute. It was really terrible. I'm a man and I kind of wanted to cry. :(

What you SHOULD use is grain alcohol in proper concentrations.

I hate these topics! IMO the most humane way to kill a fish (bigger ones at least), is to hold it tight and smack its head as fast and hard as you can with a hard, solid object. Yes. I agree. It is horrible to do but IMO it sure as hell beats dropping it in boiling/freezing water.

i've never had to kill any of my fish, but if i ever have to i think clove oil is the way to go

It's incredible that there are still discussions about the best way to kill fish... Either use clove oil or smack the fish on it's head hard and then cut through the heart. End of

Imo... I highly suggest clove oil more so if you have become attached to your fish
