you could never have a freshwater tank without a filter... salt you can. ive seen coral setups with just lights and a few pumps to push water over the rock for filtration... no filter whatsoever... not even a prefilter on the rocks...

now that would be pretty damn cool.

A lot depends on the size of the tank- nano reefs over small fresh water but for monster tanks fresh water all the way- unless we are talking a couple thousand gallon black tip tank!

both have their advantages and disadvantages. in salt, the fish are much more colorful and there are so many things you can add to the tank to make it a beautiful display, however, doing so takes a lot of work and constant monitering of water levels.

fresh some of the fish are just as beautiful, but i feel as though salt would make a better display, however the ease of a freshwater tank, to me, is much easier.

overall...any fish tank is awesome in my eyes. as long as you do it right, the tank will be a great display

I go fresh right now, don't have the time for salt really but i do want to setup a little 2.5gal-5gal nano for some pico's or something. I've read that the very tiny nano's are harder to care for than a bigger setup like a 30gal. is that true?
