Fresh Water Frog/Angler Fish Info

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There is a true freshwater toadfish / frogfish from the amazon but i cant for the heck of me remember its name... it looks very similar to its brackish cousin except it has very small / beady eyes in comparison and also quite rare...

It you are into oddballs though, what type of odd balls do you like??? Coz there are a few F/W oddball options depending on the tank size you’re working with...

So tank size is quite small I think 75 litres? So I can’t have anything too big, I was swaying toward pufferfish maybe?

If you can name any others that’s would be good!

Thanks

Pea puffers or red eye puffers would be great for a tank that size. Or Tetraodon schoutedini if you have extra bucks to spare. I believe homer set up a sticky in the puffer forum :)

75Litres = approx 15G so Hendre Hendre is right, dwarf puffers would be your best bet or some of the red eye species such as C.Irrubesco...

Schoutendini might work, but if you have no experience with sensitive fish i’d probably skip these due to the much higher price tag and possible lack of space...

Looking at figure of eight puffers? Would a single one of these work well? They are also available at my local store and look great

Unless you want to go very light brackish, then Figure 8’s are out...

GSP or Green Spotted Puffers as they are commonly sold as should also be avoided as they are not true freshwater puffers either...

The Dwarf Puffer (Carinotetraodon travancoricus) and Red eye (C.Irrubessco) would be your best bets in that size tank...

Dwarf puffers should be fairly easy to come by if you keep an eye out at your local stores...

Agreed.
There are alot of fresh water puffers, but most are hard to come by or get quite large. The majority of the ones sold in lfs are not fresh water most are brackish.
Schoutedeni are cool smaller puffer but like said high price tag, and way to active for that small of a tank. I feel bad mines in a 29g atm and hes only around 3".

I've had what was sold as a freshwater toad fish. Never did well and my guess is it was one of the ones from india sold as fresh and really needs brackish to salt long term.

I also saw that video a couple years ago and was like yes I want it. But I can find no real mention of anyone keeping one for very long or really anyone that is selling one that can truly verify it is fresh and no one local that even knew of its existence. I agree with tlindsey tlindsey they are a cool fish. I had one in my salt system for about year and came home one day to him bloated and dead. Not sure why. I think when I was feeding him he may have sucked in air......he was full grown when I got him too so coulda been old. But at the time little info on them really. I also could have over fed.

Any other oddballs that I could put in there other than puffers then?

Now I’m kinda thinking to go with an awesome aquascape with a few small community fish

Aquascaping is awesome. Just a bit of a capital outlay, but there are good resources available in the UK. Check out George Farmer

I have kept three species of toadfish and two were one hundred percent freshwater. Oyster toadfish they get big, that I kept in saltwater and tried brackish one don't think I kept enough salt in the mix and it didn't workout. Mexican toadfish not big like oysters, kept these in freshwater with no problems before I sold them these are available from time to time and are sold as freshwater toadfish but most of the know it alls discount them as salt or brackish because they have know clue what they are looking at. Last is Amazon toadfish fish or Amazon monster fish the smallest of them all and also freshwater
