Fresh Water Refugium

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
dont waste your time man. I tried it on a bigger scale and no luck. Just not enough absorption. and half the time you have a dead leaf drop in and decompose and the little bit you collected is right back. The only way this works is on a MONDO scale! Trust me

dude there was this guy who tried mangroves, their suppose to be great in reducing nitrates..dont know what happen though

Isn't that grown in salt water?

Mangroves grow in a huge variety of water conditions. They are normally found in brackish to salt water, but with the addition of some trace elements will thrive in freshwater.

If you try to set up the refuge again, remember what was said about the rate of growth. If you don't give it all the needed elements of growth, then you won't see much absorption.

.....that was me....;)

It does not work. Unless you have a MASSIVE plant growing area thats preferably outside. My mangroves look great and are sprouting new leaves daily BUT they are doing very little to reduce nitrates. And im talking about 21 red mangroves and about a cubic foot of java moss. The water quality in the refuge when just running on its own does not even significantly improve...let alone running filtering another tank with fish in it.
