im not sure how that ray will like that substrate... I'd get some sand in there or go bare bottom immediately or you're gonna have frustrated ray with a red belly.

I am planning on using sand as a substrate but we just got him tonight and that is what we have for now. do you know what kind of ray it is?

I have had rays on gravel b4 and they did fine as long as the gravel didn't have any sharp edges but they def. do perfer bare bottom or sand. $40 is an awsome price! I paied $70 and I worked at the freakin store! Iam sure there are different color patterens but mine didn't have much of a pattern so I can't positively say that it is an altantic ray but it looks great! Here is what my baby looked like.

after looking at true atlantics i dont think it looks like one? he is only 5" across. do they change shape at all as they mature? could it be an atlantic ray?

what you have looks like a reticulated stingray i think.

i think youre right.

so how big do these guys get, are they hard to keep, and is there anything else i should know about them?

I have a REtic and u have one for sure... they love Worms of all sorts... bloodworms, blackworms, earthworms, Crawlers...

Give it some sand.. and get your water above 80 degrees...

By the way i think its a female but the pics arent re-assuring!
They get relatively long, but not too round, about 14-16 Inches around i would say tops i think...

water is at 82 degrees. i will try and feed him worms tomorrow. i offered him sinking shrimp pellets today but he is new in the tank so i didnt expect him to eat yet. are they a very personable (friendly) fish?
