Has any one here tried keeping F/W Clams in their tank as added living filters? I tried searching for this already on google, but just wanted to see if any one from MKF has tried keeping them, and what your thoughts on it are?

hi i had them in my planted discus tank for many year had no problems with them but until i added some clown loaches they had a great meal from them.. now im thinking like a refuguim for them only..

^ thanks for that info... can i just ask, how big was the tank and how many clams you decided to put in?

Also, another question on my mind (which i forgot to ask), is how do you choose how many you basically need in a tank?

I have A LOT in my 90 gallon tank. I got them from the river behind my house. No problems what so ever. I just put them in till it looked good. I have close to 2 dozen small ones. The only advice i have is if you get a big one it will move your plants and other decor around when it moves.

ive had them before. they are pretty cool!!

well i had about 8 pretty big clams, i just figure it will help out my waste removal in a 90 gal planted tank, they will jet about some times hearing a clack clack sound..

I had 3 or 4 of them in my old 55 gallon until the crayfish had babies. Babies had to team up to get them open, but they did.

Thanks for all the info, i guess that means i should get a few if i want to throw them into my 200G tank then...

I got 2 different species in my tank. I had 9 of them (I think) and 2 or 3 that didn't make it. They're okay...they just lay there, but it's fun just to have around.
