Freshwater Clams

I've been keeping various species of clams for many years, the larvae are not deadly to fish and do not harm them. the larvae hitch a ride for a short time and drop off.

Asian clams are probably the easiest to keep but the more you filter your aquarium the less the clams will live. In non filtered aquariums I've had them reproduce. They like fine sand and as long as they can eat detritus will live a long time. one clam per five to ten gallons of water is a good measure. I've used clams in a sump as the only means of filtration in large tanks with some success.

Golden Freshwater Clams are an invasive species here in California, I've thought about putting a few in my fish tank. I have a soil substrate and the tank is heavily planted.
