dude, i think you'll just waste time, money and fish doing that.

I doubt those groupers were just dumped in a freshwater tank expected to survive.

here's something cool which I'ver personally experienced:

when I worked at Pet Goods, 3 saltwater specialists quit the job, the other three of us were left to do the job of maintaining both fresh and saltwater systems. now, I'm clueless to saltwater and the other two are clueless to everything.

I was told to refill the sump of the saltwater tanks with RO water without salt mix. So basically I fill the saltwater tanks with freshwater.

after about 5 weeks, we were told to test the water on the tanks to make sure everything's ok.

to the surprise of everyone, the saltwater tank containing a grouper (I forgot what kind) was pretty near freshwater level! the grouper has done fine in that tank for the past 5 weeks as salt level gradually decreased.

interesting.

of course, we quickly increased the salt level after the testing.

u could probably get loads of fully saltwater fish to undergo a gradual "transformation" into freshwater. As cool as i think it would be, i dont think its a good idea at all, i mean, they live in the sea, not a lake, so why do it? it prob isnt the best thing for the fish either. heres a shot of one from the zoo i took a while back. its in full saltwater.

o....

I dont think it would be a good idea to try and convert them, its not like they born in freshwater and then venture to salt when older like barras or Jacks. There born on the reef, The great barrier reef where the water is pristine, so IMO dont try it.

Hmmmm all this talk of barras and barbees is making me hungry might have to go see if there bitting today and get the bbq warmed up

When saltwater evaporates, the salt particles stays in the remainder sump water, its only the H20 that is gone. So when you top off the evaporated sumps at the store with RO or tapwater, the amount of salt in the water is still there. So the salt amount stays the same. So the grouper was still in saltwater. Your story would be more valid, in terms of converting the grouper, if you actually removed the physical water (thereby removing the salt in the water) from the tank and sump and replaced it with pure RO or tapwater. But maybe I'm just reading your post wrong.

i pmed that guy... no answer back.:(
