freshwater puffer???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oh no I hope you figure it out. My mom and I learned the hard way. Mom bought a puffer from LFS for my brother, we ended up caring for it. But they sold my mom a line of crap that it was freshwater and eventually he developed this milky film on him and was looking real sick. We started to add salt and he would perk up when we did and was using melaflax (sp) but I think it was too late, he eventually died. I would love to have another puffer but it breaks my heart to look at them now. I feel guilty about my brothers fish and man that was nearly 7 years ago!

yeah that would be screwed up if they lied to your mom just to make a sale knowing the puffers wouldnt survive!! i think the kid that sold me my puffers just didnt know any better, i think he really thought they were freshwater but still.

Yeah, must stores just sell GSPs and F8s as freshwater. If he was kept in freshwater, you need to keep him in freshwater, while SLOWLY converting his tank to brackish. Don't want him to die of shock. Secondly, I can almost promise you he won't eat flakes. Feed him frozen bloodworms, live snails, and live blackworms. He needs the snails to keep his beak from growing over, thereby blocking his mouth.

Krill work too, but you need to feed him those snails to keep his beak trimmed. He needs variety in his diet too, as does any fish.

^^ That is always a riot. You'll see a puzzled look followed by a desperate attempt to explain themselves.
Indeed. Sometimes its fun to ask questions you already know the answers to, then just tell them off.

Your GSP will be fine in a 29 gallon though freshwater will be bad for it. some good foods to try are market shrimp and snails such as Malaysian trumpet snails or something similar

They will die in a week if that tank wasn't cycled, which I'm pretty sure it isn't. Please read that article they liked you to on the 1st page.

You should consider taking the puffers back, and getting your tank cycled, then taking the puffers again. Most LFS are considerate enough to help you, especially when times are tough.

+1!

Crystal...

i kept these puffers for awhile...

put some aquarium salt in as soon as possible...

it will keep them alive long enough till theyre adults, then convert them to a salt water tank...if not, sell them. lol

They might end up eating the guppy but yes, krill and other hard-shelled foods will keep their ever-growing teeth trimmed.

I bought a figure 8 puffer just to have something to do with all my pond snails in planted tanks... Live snails are the best puffer food.
