Friend is rehoming convicts, can I make it work?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I say ideally an all male tank as convicts will try and breed with anything. 3 or 4 male cons, a green terror is a good suggestion as they cant breed with cons if it happens to be a female, and maybe a nic. male or female they do not crossbreed much either. sounds like a good stock to me. IMHO if you are not a fan of convicts dont get them, they can become more of a nuisance than entertaining. i only keep one male specimen at a time and only as an enforcer in my unruly grow out tanks when i cant get/afford a parrot large enough. the instant he starts breeding with females i fire him for sexual harassment on the job...lol. parrot males do a far superior job. less damage inflicting, sterile, easier to rehome and people find them interesting...i dont really

I'd go with a same sex salvini to throw out a different color.
Maybe a lutino oscaar.
JD, GT and Acara are also good suggestions, but I'd want something a little lighter to go with cons, unless they are pink cons, then reverse it.

Depends on the fish too, have had a male that wouldnt tolerate other male cons and others were fine. As mentioned the males have the longer flowing fins. Females are more colorful.
Likely to aggression issues with either so don't bother if you don't really want them.

Depending where they are at she could off load them on CL. Plenty of people keep them for feeder factories and I haven't had issue dumping mine when a few made it past feeder stage in the tanks.

You could do a pair of cons and a smaller growing black piranha like s compressus, s. Sanchezi. S geryi, s. Elongatus, s irritans, etc. They kill and eat the cons if given the chance and IMO piranhas in general are boring, but a lot of people keep cons with them to provide a safe source of feeders.

I think people are getting the wrong idea... it's not that I don't like convicts, if I didn't I wouldn't bother. I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't be a convict-only tank. I like variety. Shrug... just my thing.

I can also put them in my 125 and move my community to the 90... would give me more options, no?

I do like Green Terrors! I heard that cons being more aggressive than JDs balanced out a bit with their size though, true?

The JDB's are very timid and take longer to grow

JD common is aggressive and not intimidated Cons

The JDB's problems would have to feed and swim freely

Probably would be stressed, and stress leads to continuous low immunity and disease

Enter Cons of females with a JD GT or female female, so you will not have problems with socialization and aggression by the unexpected formation of couples in the tank.

I see... I think I will probably go with the Green Terror as that seems to be the most compatible... will make sure to post pictures when all is said and done heh :) Thanks for the advice everybody!
