Frontosa and Rays = FAIL

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think you may have a pretty complicated problem. I still think that there is some imbalance to this tank. Even though its been going for 2 months the excessive water changes may not allow it to totally balance out. You say your water parameters are fine, is your ammonia totally zero as wellas your nitrite? How do the fish act before they die? Do they turn dark, do they breathe heavy, sit on the bottom of the aquarium? Are there any other symptoms? I can't really see a stingray harming the Frontosas. What kind of biological filter do you have?

The tank has been going for almost a year. It's fully establishes, and I have always done this large of a water change. Even when I had the other rays and datnoids in it as well.

My params are 0,0,20-25.

The fish are fine, and then when I wake up, they are dead in the tank. The only thing I have noticed is they are drained of color, which is normal for dead fish.

Like I stated, I have FX5, Eheim Pro 3, and 2 AC110s.

Yeah, I think I'm just gonna keep a small light on the tank.

I had 5 clown loaches at the size of about 4 to 5" in a pup ray tank. Every month I would find one floating at the top without a mark on it like you are experiencing, except....... a tiny little hole in its belly where I think a barb went in and out. Lost 4 loaches like this and finally had to take the last one to the lfs for credit. I don't keep loaches in the ray tank anymore!

do you run a UV if not then thats always a good thing to have

in over 6 years of having p14 i have only had to treat them once and that was after a big move

best to be safe rather than sorry and for me a UVS is a must

This is one super mystery...

Yes it is.

I notice weird things happen to those keeping stingrays; they have such odd behaviour, the fish not the owner. lol

This was my tank befor my move. These fish lived together for over a year without incident. I owned the fronts for 7 years and the rays for a year and a half. Like stated by Vamptrev there is something else at work. Have you thought perhaps the stress could have caused an internal parasitic outbreak in the intestines? Fronts are very bashfull and the stress of being moved along with having rays as tank mates could certainly stress them to the point of causing a parasitic outbreak in the intestinal tract. This would also explain why you are not seeing any external signs. Though intestinal infections will and usually do show external signs and can take long peroids to actually kill your fish, the time table may have been greatly shortened by the move and such.

What do you feed your frontosa. Befor and after the move?

Is it possible that the frontosa are contracting some sort of illness from the rays. Maybe something that is dormant in the rays but terminal in the frontosa as they have no immunity to it being as they are from vompletrly different waters. Did u say any of these fish are wild caught?
