Frontosa and Rays = FAIL

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
try putting a moon light on the tank. a few blue LED lights or something..
See if you lose anymore.
They are either getting scared at night, not getting the sleep they need since the rays are so active or being spooked and/or running into the glass..
Thats my opinion...

so Id try a moon light, or devide them for a week and see if they still die. If they dont die, then its prob stress from not being able to sleep...

Id myself would try the moon light. Might help on getting spooked..
The divier may help for you to see if its a sleep problem though

I really doubt it anything internal with these guys. They get hikari cichlid gold sinking. They have always gotten this.

I think it has to do with at night, since well, that's when they die.

I left a light on last night, and all is well. Gonna see how long it lasts.

Hikari gold sinking is not a good staple food. The food is made with amajority of none fish proteins. Frontosa are predatory only. I still to thisday don’t think Hikari foods are all that nutritional. They do claim to providea “stabilized,” vitamin C source but I don’t know how long this could actuallylast before it oxidized if kept on the shelf. It is possible that if this wasthe sole source of your fronts diet that they may have developed some autoimmuneissues that simply didn’t really affect them till you moved them and they hadto deal with the new tanks and rays.

Also as mentioned earlier the rays could be carrying a pathogen of some kindthat those fronts just could not deal with. That is a really good point

Hikari isn't the only thing that they are fed, it's just the main thing. they are also fed shrimp pellets, krill, market shrimp, spirulina pellets, and I do feed them medicated food for one week every 2 months. I'm not really going to go into the Hikari debate, but I feed it to all of my tanks for the most part, so I don't buy it from the store, I buy it in bulk from Jehmco, and it's fresh. It doesn't even last a month, and it's kept in a sealed container.

The rays can't be moved to the 150 because I upgraded tanks, and moved everyone around, and sold some tanks. Like I said, the rays is more than likely the issue. They were always really skiddish when they were in the 150; to the point 1 actually jumped out and hit the floor. They are not as skiddish as they were in this tank, but I think at night the rays really do a number on them. I think I am going to even add some more flower pots, as the fronts like to hide in them.

I don't think it's anything illness related, or I would think that the oldest or youngest would be affected, but it just seems like it's random ones.

Like I said, I can move the big rays to the 180 with the datnoids and move the small rays up here. 2 10" rays in a 180 with no other bottom dwellers should be ok for a bit until I can get everyone figured out.

I had a group of 7 and i moved them from home to my tanks at work and on the drive i lost 1 and lost the rest exept 1 weeks after. Same thing had rays I'n the tanks only fronts died no sign of anything

Alright... so update...

I started with a colony of 17, and as of yesterday, I am down to 7.

Bought a new test kit... cleaned filters.. everything is stable and as it should be.

2 nights ago, the one smaller ray in the tank starts freaking out.. he's flailing at the top, showing his eyes out of the water.. which I know means ammonia.. so, I immediately do a 50% water change.

While the water is draining, I pulled 5 ammonia testers out.. all drop kits.. and tested.. 0 ammonia.

5 minutes later, he was dead. No physical sign of irritation. And the big rays, and juranese cats were a-ok. Even the fronts were chill, and they are the first ones to show signs of issues I've noticed.

So.. the tank is getting emptied, and we are starting fresh.

And I am NOT putting the Frontosa back in.

This issue didn't happen until we added the Frontosa. We had small pups, datnoids, and carpintis in here with the large rays, and cats, and not one issue ever.

I'm way lost. Nothing in this tank is different.

I never had any issues with my frontosa started with 10 and then sold all ten later. Really liked them in the ray tank. They were 7-13inches though so large.
