can fronts learn to recognize their keepers?

I'm not sure what you mean by "recognize." If you mean actually recognize the difference between people and literally know who their "owner" is, then I don't know because I have never had fronts. If you simply mean do they recognize when a person comes to the tank to feed them, then yes. I have witnessed this in other people's tanks and at my LFS. Also, I will comment that in my 125g (with mbuna and haps) my fish not only recognize when I walk near the tank, but they know when it is feeding time. Approximately 5min before feeding time they begin to gather in the spot that I always feed waiting and reminding me that it is feeding time.

Also, when I walk by the tank the fish come to the front, but they mostly ignore my wife when she walks by. So it is possible that they do recognize the difference between us - or it could be the weight difference since I am over 100lbs heavier than my wife. The extra weight causing more vibrations in the tank or something - IDK.

I mean can they tell the difference between different people?

don no about frontosa but vit all d experience i have i observed my fish able to difff. between me(feeder) and others....

Most larger fish can discern between people pretty well, even with different clothes etc. Fish that are kept in a bedroom display this more than fish in a living room where they see more variety of people.

I had a group of mpimbwe blue's and i would say they could recognize me from other people. I see this with alot of fish but especially one of my datnoides. I feed him consistantly different than a couple other employees at our shop. i show him his goldfish by holding it between my index finger and thumb and he follows me to wherever i put it. i do this so the Pbass, aro, oscar, and gourami doesnt get it. He will look at other people but i watch him from across the fish room he deffinately follows me and is lookin at me more than other people. of course i spend hourss in the same room as him most days.
To me, they can definitely tell one person from another

I have seen videos of other people's frontosas coming up to the surface as the food is being dropped in, I'd say thats a good sign of recognition of the "feeder". Some have said on other forums that the blue variants are less bashful and are more prone to do this. I have a bunch of juvi burundi at about 2" and they do not scurry away from me still, I suppose this may change later... we'll see.
