Frustrated with JD's

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There's no aggression from any of my fish. The JD's hide together sometimes so I don't think he's scared of her... Would a darker substrate and a dark painted background help them settle down?

There's no rhyme or reason really. My large male is the most social fish going in my 300 with SD's and other cichlids, but when he was in my 90 with smaller cichlids and giant danios, he hid all the time. He dug pits in every tank I've housed him in but so have pretty much every cichlid I've owned except for angelfish and my Freddy.

In nature they are fairly bold, but are always close to a crevice to dive into. And I believe a totally white substrate with no dark areas would make them feel very vulnerable. Below is their habitat in Mexico.
Mollies outnumbered them at least 100 to 1, probably more, and the wild ones constantly watch the mollies to access danger. When the mollies startle, the JDs dive in a crevice.

Ok. I think I'll go down to Tractor Supply Co. and pick up some black diamond to replace most of my white sand. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Like someone stated above, i think being in a 55 makes them very jittery as well. They are aware of how much space they do and DON'T have to hide. When my dempseys were in the 125 they would be out and about. When they started breeding and I gave them their own 55, it was like the downgrade in space made them feel more vulnerable, and they hid constantly. I gave them away to a friend with a 200 and another pair of dempseys and all four of them "school" around together, although the one I gave him is still prone to hiding sometimes.

I've got a nice LFS not too far away that will trade fish out with me. Would you guys suggest I turn in my JD's and get some Parrot Cichlids since they will fit in the tank better?

i have a black background and sand substrate and my female jd shows her colors just fine. she does tent to hide in caves tho but isnt as anti social as yours seem to be. sometimes its just the fishes individual personality. how bright our your lights and the water temp?

Same as above for me (black BG and sand substrate). Never had a problem with either of my JDs (normal and EB).

The large male just chills and swims around, the female EBJD is a little skittish but that's just down to her being the smallest Cichlid in the tank. She hides in the bogwood a fair bit but is very sociable at feeding time.
