Frustrated with JD's

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I recently have to manage a skittish synspillum which is as shy as,JD. I bought him about a month ago and placed him in a tank of growouts to acclimate him. He is the largest fish in the tank, so I thought that it would give him a good start as he is safe from bully. Wrong! He was not afraid of his tankmates but me and wouldn't come out until I stayed away. I thought his shyness would soon go away. Wrong! He remained shy after a week with no sign of calming down. So I made a bold move to put him in my 125 gal community cichlid tank with rough tankmates. He was immediately challenged and had to hide from his new tankmates. He was so distracted by his rough tankmates that he had time to feel shy. After about a week, the pecking order has settled down and he came out more and more. Today, he is the fish right in the front of the tank begging for food from me when I come near. So a change in environment can drastically change a fish behavior.

If you're referring to my pics, the little one is DEFINITELY female ;)

Why do you say this one is definitely a female ?

All cichlids dig and rearrange the decorations espically midevil's, but If you want a cichlid that doesnt hide then get an Oscar or Jaguar, but jd's thats what they do they love to hide if you have a jd and you dont have any hiding spots your jd will be a light brown color which isnt good you want your jd's to be black with the sparkles showing up realy good on there gills and the red on the tup of the fins showing. Keep rearrange the set up untill you can find something capable.
