Maybe your male prefers the company of other male XIs. If that pike equivelant of a butt ass naked tabledance dont get him all worked up, he may be living an alternative lifestyle........

Rob you R crazy as hell!:ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:

what tank is that in the reflection of your picture.....looks nice.
It's an 83 gallon soft coral tank. For the most part it has leathers, shrooms, zoa, and predatory soft corals, and of course fish. Nothing real special.

Well, my females have "experimented" before, check my avatar. I guess the male could be thinking the same thing,.

that's just so wrong but seriously hilarious.

what size tank? have you tried a flower pot, more current, the leaves or BW extract?
The tank is a standard 125 gallon. I've been reading alot of dwarf pike breeding reports. Upside down knotched flowerpots seem to work the best, or caves with only one entrance. I haven't been able to find a flowerpot that is large enough for the male to turn around in and fertilize the eggs, and will also fit in the tank. If I can do it carefully, I might try to cut a 24" wide, shallow pot in half. I just haven't found the right one. The tank has 1000 gph going through the filters and 800 gph of flow by powerheads. Plenty of flow, I would think. I haven't gotten the leaves from Miles yet.

Just a note: he was doing 10% PER DAY...so 70% per week. A good amount of water being changed, and no big swings in parameters.
Like I said, if I could do smaller water changes, I would. About 1 lb. of frozen food (silversides are very oily) and a handful of pellets every day makes nitrates build up quite fast. Doing 50% every day keeps the water as stable as possible(<20ppm NO3).

As of this moment, I'm just trying to keep them as a stable pair. Also, the male HATES light, room light seems to be ok, so the tank lights stay off now. All day long they hang out together and chase devils and tinfoils.

Do you have both females in there at the same time? Its possible that the other female is distracting them. Or it could be that the male is getting frustrated because she won't breed with him. Get a HUGE piece of driftwood, holow it out. Lay one piece horizontally, another piece vertically. Might just be there are not enough spawning sites for them. Keep trying man, you'll get it right eventually. You've got a head start on most of us. Two females, nice! ;)

No, I only have one female in there. I've tried it with both females, they just paired up together and eventually, he beat them. Before I got the male, one of the females layed eggs with the other. Of course I thought that would mean they would be easy to breed :(. Just about every night, the female belly dances for the male.

Hollowed out stumps are a good idea, but they would have to be huge, and it'd alot of work hollowing them out. As an alternative, I was thinking large terracotta, vase-shaped planters. Now if I can just find plain, unpainted terracotta.

You could take the large Terracotta planter and cut lenth wise. You should be able to get one if nothing else at a garden center. Walmart usually doesn't have them in at this time of year, at least around here.

Well, I finally found a decent pot of them a couple days ago. Biggest bonus, it was free. I added the pot and changed the orientation of the wood, creating levels of driftwood. The male immediately hid in the wood. The female in her outgoing way, carefully examined the pot. After a while the male came out to check it out. Right next to it[the pot], they began head to tail chasing.

After a bit, the female entered the pot, with the male slowly following behind.

She came out, he went it. Then she did a quick belly dance for him while entering the pot.

Wehen both of them were in the pot, all you could see was them swimming head to tail in tight circles. Eventually, they stopped, pausing at the entrance, and quivered to each other.

They definitely like the pot, and are constantly displaying back and forth. I have to say, I'm extremely excited!

In another post about 'Xingu III', I showed how dark the female 'Xingu I's could get. Here she is even darker.
4005dark_female.jpg

She gets dark like this for two reasons: when displaying to the male and when the male is chasing other fish. When chasing other fish, he goes into a frenzy, even chasing her if she gets in the way. Almost immediately, she'll turn dark, and the chasing stops. As you can see, he has lost his timidness. I've never seen them to so much mutual displaying. It's great!

Im diggin on the Xingu love story.......:drool::popcorn: That female is real sexy lookin too......

i have breed large pikes in the past and i have found that i needed a very large tank 240 and up to get them to spawn successfully.Awesome pikes you have!
