I bichir might work but most would grow large enough that they might go after your other fish as well.

Even thought the smallest "other fish" (that I care about-convict female doesn't quite count..sortof) is a 5 inch female venustus?

Malawi eye biter!:eek3:

I've already gone that route (owned 4 for a while), and at this point I want to "drift" from what is familiar to me.

Can anyone identify which species of pike cichlid this little guy might be? It and a bunch if it's look-a-likes are at a local store. The store brought them in as generically named "pike cichlid".

Is it Crenicichla regani?

festivum? mine eats neons

Nope bro, thats Crenicichla sp. 'belly crawler'. They get up to about 8" for females...males rarely push more than 10" Be a good candidate, although they are slower them most pikes because they have an atrophied swimbladder...which makes them awkward swimmers. Not many fish can match the speed of pikes though, once they get moving they are a pain to catch. Hold on...i just found something that might interest you...check you PM!!! ;)

Bichirs are faster then you may think, mine ate 3 pictus cats, I was in awe. I think a bichir would be good, or a pike either or.

I think I've got it (or will soon).

crenicichla johanna ($12)

and for grins and giggles

Petenia splendida(red snook) ($4).

The big lfs in Salt Lake got some small johanna's in last week and they've been trying to sell the snook for a long time.

Peanut-I'm slowly moving away from african cichlids (natural drift) so in future additional crenicichla may find their way into my larger tanks.
