I've always heard it shortens their lifespan but didn't know it was a proven fact. I just took it at face value because it seems to make sense.
 
Here's my Red Oscar. All 5 of mine have grown just what the averages say-about an inch a month to 8" and then they slow down. This one is 11" now (with tail) and he's about 1 1/2 yrs old. I think the key for growth is feeding a variety but not stuffing them full of food. I'll always believe a lot of water changes & keeping nitrates under 5-10 ppm is the way to go. That's what's worked for me. I like this picture because it shows him flaring his gills, it creacks me up, he does it every time I show him a certain wooden box.

It's where I keep the water test bottles and tubes. He only does it when I raise the lid though actually, just goes nuts and tries to attack it. He hates that box lol
Thanks both of you. He's my 1st Oscar. Liked him soooo well I've gotten 4 more since. I could imagine myself giving up all the other fish if I had to, but not the Oscars no matter what.
