Some of you might remember that I keep a pond in my backyard for silver( and occasionally jardini) arowanas. Most of the big silvers Ive had back there have had different degrees of drop eye, and the pond has always brought them back up- not always to perfect, but always better.

Well, a few weeks ago I overfilled the pond, I knew I should drain some off because I thought the extra water might make them feel confident enough to leep- but I left it high because not only was I lazy, but the 2'er and almost 3'er that were in there had never tried before- I went out the next day to find the 2'er in the dirt- I picked it up and felt a twitch- I kept it in the flow of the return and then the filter, but within 24 hours it was dead-

I was mad at myself, but in an effort to not have a total loss, I decided to try some DE surgery on my pet(not the easiest decision to make)- It wasnt as easy as the video I was going by made it look- while trying to get the top of the eye out, to remove the fat, the eye burst onto my arm- effing GD gross! and failed attempt 1- so I flipped over the fish and tried the other side, same disgusting thing happened- now, not only was I mad at myself, but I was mad at the fish for spewing eye grossness from both its eyes at me!

I had 1 last chance at making it less than a total waste, and that was to preserve the skull, to go with my 2' black and 2' jardini skulls- so I chopped off its head, put it far in the backyard with a cage over it, and let the bugs have at it- Ill take pictures of all 3 when the maggots have had therir fill

Yeah, DE surgery is not something i would attempt myself ... for exactly the same reason as what happened to ya.

sorry your loss dude

thanks-
I felt like I had to at least try the surgery, because what is someone supposed to do when their more expensive aros gets DE? at least I know one thing I shouldnt do, and I also know Im definitely not ready for a live subject yet- but who knows, even if it takes years to get it down, at least at some point, I know I will know how to do it- I mean, Ive never even sedated a fish yet, but at some point Ill need to know how to do that too-

but over here people arent as quick to take their prized, but still illegal, asian arowana to a vet, so its up to us do-it-ourselvers to perform surgery on them

sad story with a good try. must have been pretty funny to see you try that though. whenever i try something new my mom always watches me mess it up somehow.

Good thinking to use the body for educational purposes!

What a jerk spewing his eye goo at you, bet you weren't so sorry for him after that.
