what the hell does raphael catfish and bug stew have to do with DE surgery?

Nothing wrong with a little post surgical meal, yum.

Here is a pic of the said aro below. Seems like the upper "bag" is filled with fluid and I am hoping to drain it.

Just curious why it is such a big deal that your arow has drop eye... he is still a gorgeous arow... mine has drop eye... as old as he is i could care less... trying to keep these guys in good shape and living a long life is a hard enough task... look at all the time and effort and money you put into him.. why risk all that because of some fluid in his eye... a do it yourself experiment... good luck if you do it... i just hope it ends successful..

As I stated earlier;

Yeah I am concerned that it will rip open one or both of the bags. Just need to do some research on what to use to sedate the beast.

He is in a tank with 3 other aro, even though I have removed all decor, I am still fearful of extended injury.

You wanted to preserve the skull ;)

Brian- from what I understand, you would push the top of the eye back in to where its supposed to be, that second, white, upper bag will protrude out between the top of the eye and the eye socket- the part that protrudes gets clipped away- also theres an over the counter sedative thats more trustworthy than clove oil, when I remember the name Ill let you know

Liz- thats what were trying to do, is let the fish live life AND see life- the 3'er I still have in the pond hasnt seen anything but catfish in a long time, the pond seems to be helping, but I still have to hit him on the barbells with floating pellets to trigger his mouth to open, he cant see them otherwise and I refuse to crack and feed sinkers- all that would do is further weaken the already atrophied muscles

studd- the arowana and bugs made my tummy feel yucky

Great thread guys since there is so little known about DE and how to cure it. Subscribed. :)

My aro has slight DE in both eyes, but not bad at all for 2'+. I could not imagine ever trying this, so best of luck!

I'm not sure I would want to do any cutting or clipping. that bag over it's eye would make for a pretty big open wound if cut away. I was hoping maybe to just reduce the size of the bag by draining it, guess well see if that works or not.

I have heard that clove oil works well, but I haven't tried it.

This past year I had to sedate 20 flounder to tag them for my thesis. I used MS-222 aka Finquel aka Tricaine Methanesulfonate at a lower concentration. You just keep them in it until they go limp, then you take them out. However, you only have about 1 minute to work with them before they snap out of it!

I have also used higher concentrations and/or longer exposures to euthanize.

how do you heat your pond in the winter, at night? do you leave your arowana in there? does it get as cold as 40-50 F during the night in winter?

in the winter, I use 3x 300watt heaters, but what really helps is covering the pond with a waist high greenhouse-
in the summer the black pond liner acts as a passive heater- I have a harder time keeping it under 90* in the summer, than I do keeping it over 70* in the winter!
at least one night every winter, the air temperature drops into the 50s

DE update- the DE therapy pond is once again working! the almost 3'aro that I have out there, was literally looking straight down when he arrived to DE pond- and last night for the 1st time ever, I saw his pupil from above! his eyes are definitely turning back up
