FW Puffers

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, with the help of the the guys over at tpf, I'm fairly settled on one palembangs puffer. Only fairly though, might still change my mind!! lol. Only thing that puts me off is the possiblility of it ending up as one of those spot the puffer tanks where the little guy never ever comes out.

Also thinking about possibly a group of c. irrebusco instead, but I need to find some more on how well it goes if they live in a group first before I can consider that properly.

I've in the past kept and by luck had a palembang pair breed... Honestly unless you really love lurkers they really arent the most active fish, and i noticed my male never used to leave his cave while the female would to a certain extent explore when i wasnt looking...

The only time you really get much reaction from them is during feeding...

Now as for irrubessco, you can mix them to a certain extent... And i use the term "mix" very loosely... In a tank your size i'm going to guess you might be able to get away with 1M/4F combo?

Although thats more of a guess on my part... Since i know of the res eye puffers, these guys are considered the most "gentle" again using the term loosely...

Also since you mentioned palembangs, im going to throw in hairy puffers for lurkers....

And an Abei for more active species..

If you don't like an inactive puffer, lurkers are not for you.

We don't use the term Tetraodon for that family of puffers anymore.

Ta homer :) Will have a proper look. So many puffers! My heads spinning!! lol.

PP, what is it then? I kept finding that little guy under tetraodon abei and couldn't find him in the PP?

I've been looking into axolotyls for this tank too, so I'm far from settled still!

Unfortunately the axolotyl wont work with puffers for 2 main reasons...

1) they require different parameters, puffers tend to be tropical while axolotyl is a cold water creature

2) the puffer will most likely bite its gills till there is just nubs left...

But i feel your pain trying to choose a puffer, i had the same problem when i discovered the great selection of freshwater puffers...
