My tank Overflows through a Filter Sock into a 38G tank. I breed Cons in the 38 Gallon Tank. I have an FX5 hooked up to the 38G and pumping back into the main tank. As well as a Mag 12.5 pumping back into the main tank.

FX5 is set up with standard sponges, and baskets are filled with Matrix. On the top of the top basket I have a polishing pad the size of the whole top and it's cut so that is doesn't black the pipes. I opened the canister 2 in the last couple of months. 1 to replace the pad, and 1 just to see what it looked like inside.

My water is always 0 0 0, Tank is a 150G and stock is 2 Os, 11 Giant Danios, 1 6" Pleco, couple large snails, and about 50 1/2" Convicts. Gravel vac 1x weekly, and 30% water change 1x weekly.

Mike

This would mean?

I have 2 Fx5's on a 300G w/ a 60G sump and the FX's just have ceramic rings and some mech filter material. I rely on them for circulation and mech filtration.
Love em!

0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrites, 0 Nitrates. Highest Nitrates ever get is .5 and then water change.

They got out of hand when my power went out for 3 days. But every thing is stable again now.

Water changes & Gravel vac. They get up to about .5 by every Sat. I gravel vac about 30% of the water out. Add Prime and Stability and fill up. Wait 10 minutes and turn the filters and pumps back on.

Check water about an hour later and 0 0 0. I test every Wednesday, and Twice on Sat, once before Maintenance and once an hour after.

Mike

Edit: Also, I swap my filter sock out every other day to a fresh one. I have 4 socks on hand and wash them with the whites. Hot water and bleach in the washing machine. Then stick them in a bucket with a 1/2 gallon of water and prime for about an hour before I use them.

Not to derail here but I'm curious how you get 0 nitrates? Do you run anything else? I know lots of folks around here who would kill to get nitrates under 5-10 ppm on a regular basis. I run matrix too but I have far less stock than you but I've never had nitrates that low. Just curious....

Also, what do you test with? Thanks

Just seems impossible with your stock...

IDK what type of test kit you have but nitrate is not read by .5...
lowest is 0 then 5,10,20,40 etc. Even with an understocked tank your nitrates will accumulate because your fish do make waste.

I also have plants hanging out of the top of my tank.

Pics in this thread of everything but the plants. No pics since the plants. But will take more soon.

I definately need to try some of that matrix and see if it works for me. Both of my tanks are pretty stocked and require 2 50 pct water changes a week to keep the nitrates below 20 ppm. Hopefully the matrix will help

I test with this
AP3321_50.jpg

and that's what I meant was 5, Just a bad habit of throwing a . in their. Kind of like when I capitalize letters of words when I am typing.

IE: So What Are You Doing Today? Bad habit I picked up playing MMORPGs.

Also I shake the bottles for about 30 Seconds before testing water. And clean my vials out with tank water before testing.
