*FX5/HAGEN CUSTOMERS

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have 3 FX5s and I've had problems with all 3. Last year one of the motors failed on my first fx5. I sent it in to get fixed and they sent it back about 2 weeks later.

Then the other 2 FX5s I have both failed in the same week. Both of the motors failed on that one too. I cleaned them out every 6 months and they still broke. I'm going to sell them and just go with a sump and an ac110 on my 210g tank.

Dam ive never heard such problems with an Fx5! Especially 3 times in a row...

That 1 ac110 wont really do much on a 210g lol make that 2 ac110s w/ a powerhead + your sump :D

Ok so it's all installed, ended up trimming about 10" off the bar.

I had some aluminum sitting around in which I bent into a clamp to hold the spray bar on the opposite end, works great and very sturdy:

The vinyl hose is very tight on the 4" section of the stock intake tube:

Imo looks great, I can hardly even see it and it's already stirring up debris and my korillia powerhead is blasting it straight toward the intake:

The flow is perfect and just what I was looking for to keep the surface of my pfs clean, all in all a good solid build inspired by razorbackfan, Thx for your help man!

F1, why bother to have a spray bar? Spray bar in any form slows down the turn over rate of the filter even though it looks to be faster. On my filters, I take the spray bars off and just use a couple of cheap power heads to create surface agitation and desired current.

But craZy worth it!
I got mine on sale for 180..
It reads temp, conductivity, allows me to monitor my biological and mech/chem filtration w/ graphs, etc.

The best thing about it is ease of maintenance. No need to get your hands dirty when cleaning the mechanical cartridge plus they have cartridges that remove nitrite and help keep them low. Also its nearly impossible to leak...so IMO, the G series is worth it in the long run :D

I looked at its big brother G6...for something more expensive than my favorite big filter, it only offers half the filter volume for bio filtration. For those of us who don't use chemical stage, the filter just sounds a little too gimmicky. As far as the electronics are concerned, for me it's fewer the better.

Thats awesome! I just wish the gph was higher, but i guess id the unit is more efficient that doesnt exactly matter as much.

Sounds like there was some other element to the failures, substrate maybe? Never heard of that.

And you said both failed in the same week but you cleaned them out every 6 months? Sounds fishy

Cuz i couldnt get the water to keep the substrate clean, gph is awesome but if its not doing what i want then its useless, i have a korrilia 1400gph pump and a hydor 125 sf as well, now the bar sprays exactly where debris rests and the ph blows it to the intake. Believe me i was always oppossed to the idea but i obtained all the pieces for free so i thought id try it and if i didnt like it no big deal, i must say im happy and flow isnt slowed to much at all.

When i take the endcap off it sprays damn nead as much as it did.

women?! pleeze. you're like one of my grandsons. I can't even visualize you thattaway, it's just wrong.
I forgot all about NLS.

you might wanna cut back on your jet fuel intake.

There's a reason why the fancy AGA high end filters are basically the same design as eheim classic filters - it works the best with the least failure points.

But let's not turn this fan thread into an eheim fan thread ;).

Why do you say it slows it down? What happens if you have more holes and total size of holes on spray bar is equal to or larger than the nozzle? I have used spray bars for years and years and have noticed very minimal difference in overall turnover but the benefits in current really outweigh a loss of minimal GPH. I get great surface movement, even spread of current, more current, adjustable, helps lift debris off sand across a longer span, etc...I guess to each their own but I prefer spray bars to a nozzle unless, as in one of my tanks, I already have a spray bar running width of tank and I use other canister filter with nozzle.

Because any impedance to the flow of the water will slow it down. It could very well be that you have already enough flow in your tank, which is fine but a spray bar does affect the flow rate of the filter.

Yes...if the holes added together are smaller than the output hose but depending on the hole size it may or may not slow it down. I would like to see somebody run a test to figure out the curve as to how many and what size holes actually becomes detrimental. I do know that with the dual nozzle that comes with this filter the flow in the tank is not very good when compared to a properly made spray bar. If you lose 10gph in overall filtration from a filter that pushes over 600gph what does it really matter when you gain all the aforementioned benefits? I guess it is a pro vs cons type situation and what each person is trying to accomplish.

I would say replacing the stock ribbed hoses with smooth vinyl would easily make up for the spray bar gph reduction, and i used 1" id for the spray bar, when i remove the end cap the flow is just as great as it was pre spray bar.

Ecoli you know i was always for gph but this was an experiment to see if it would hurt flow and imo it didnt so im happy and keeping it, and now my pfs is squeky clean!
