FX5 making tank a snow globe

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah,so there is an air leak somewhere, It is at least as bad again today as it ever was.:nilly:

So we've narrowed it down, any suggestions on how to find just where this air leak is?If I could just find it I'm sure I could stop it somehow......:irked:

If you bought your FX5 new, it came with an extra quick disconnect hose connector.

I'd switch the un used one out for the one on your intake first and then the output to see if that helps.

Then I'd examine the seal around the lid to make sure there is nothing preventing a good seal. If you do not find anything, I'd start with replacing the seal on the lid.

Trial by fire is the only way I know of.

And if none of this works, I'd examine the intake and return hoses for a pinhole... I imagine that the hole on the return would be easy to find as its probably leaking. The intake hose I would think would be the culprit...you may not see the hole but switch the hoses (put the intake on the return and the return on the intake)

This will also test for the air leak.

As I typing, I'm coming to the conclusion that I'd be focused on the intake side of things first.

Good luck.

Also make sure your quick disconnects are all the way down...

I just bought the fricken thing a month ago, someone please help?!!:nilly: :nilly:

I'm all for fixing what you can, but at some point, sooner than later, I would take it bck, am I missing something as to why your not?

hm...ive heard mixed things bout the fx5...i'm sytarting to lean toward the ppl that think there a pain in the ***...

well I switched the two hoses and I didn't see any water dripping from the intake hose anywhere when it was hooked up to the output connection....I'm not sure what that means.

I ordered new hoses I don't know when I'll get them.If the new hoses don't fix it then I totally and completely give up.I will probably just wait till it burns itself out and hope that doesn't happen before I have the money to spare for a new one.

As for why I don't take it back to my LFS or send it in to Fluval the reasons are numerous.....

-First of all I purchased it about 2 months ago, I know I had said 1 month but thinking back on it it was the very beginning of June....
If you guys have LFS that will take a product (even an FX5 or similarly pricey equipment) about 2 months after purchase then I envy you...no I haven't asked but I'm almost positive mine won't.

-second I didn't buy it straight off the shelves I got it in a "starter kit" sort of a deal that my LFS owner threw together for me where everything was at a low price because I was purchasing it all together (tank,stand,filtration,heaters,lights...) and so in the end the FX5 was like $200 and he didn't charge me tax.Him giving me a "hook up" on it,if you will, gives me all the more reason to believe he wouldn't consider a return on it....

-third is the fact that he warned me against buying it and didn't really want to order it for me in the first place, saying that nearly every customer he has ordered one for so far has had nothing but complaints.I argued with him telling him that of the 20,000 some odd members at MFK not many have bad things to say about the FX5's performance.

-fourth we have the fact that the leak may be something I caused myself messing with the filter and now simply can't find the cause.Probably the case because it was working fine before the first time I took it completely apart and adjusted the hose lengths.

-Also as far as sending it in to Fluval themselves reason four applies but also I don't have any sort of proof of purchase.

-Last of all one of the biggest reasons I don't consider taking it back (besides that I can't w/out P.O.P) is because I need it.I don't have a very heavy bioload right now as my fish are all very young so I have all three trays with just a bit of polyfiber for mechanical filtration and the foam inserts are my primary source of biological filtration.I recently added a sump but it's not been on the tank for nearly enough time to have an established BB colony.I looked into that route and from what I gather when you send it back they want it all, everything that came in the box with it,foam inserts included.

those are my primary reasons for wanting to fix it so bad as opposed to returning it or sending it in.

Thank you everybody for taking the time out to try and assist me in finding the problem with my FX5,but I think, and correct me if I'm wrong, that we can all agree that if I change the hoses and it still doesn't stop than this one has MFK stumped and I'm S.O.L.

if you can't fix a almost new canister filter...
I don't care about how great of a deal it was, I'd take it back and let the LFS deal with the warranty issues.

First thing is how is your media set up in the filter? And Ill say its not an airleak or else the filter itself would stop more frequently to prime itself then restart since its a built in mechanism for this filter Or youd have a puddle of water somewhere. The thing that fixes the problem for me is to CLEAN my media for mechanical filtration. For example in my FX5 top chamber is all Mechanical middle and bottom is BIO only with a filter pad on it. Due to the high turnover on the filter the mechanical filtration needs to be maintaned a bit more then other filters. This is the problem i have is when i use polishing pads and let them sit in there for a awhile. But after i clean everything out there are no problems. Shoot me a PM if this doesnt work cause Ive helped a few people with problems on ther FX5 before.
