whys it not a good idea??

ive got it in all my filters and my water is perfect

It's only good for wet/dry filters. In an Fx5 you're just wasting the benefits of the filter.

Since there are 3 canisters would it be ok to use both products??

according to Seachem (obviously not the most unbiased source), matrix has more surface area than eheim substrat pro, and its a lot cheaper. Whatever ceramic/sintered glass biomedia you choose, you will be fine. It will be able to handle the ammonia your fish produce. Matrix is a better deal than any of the others though, so I don't see any reason to spend extra for no added benefit.

Do i need to put carbon in any of the canisters?

only if u have problems with discoloration and smell in the water. it will also help to trap very fine particles in the water. it helps if u have new driftwood in the tank - it will help remove that brownish color caused by the tannins, its harmless by the way.

ive personal never used carbon and never have had to use it. with enough filtration and circulation in the tank, there usually is no need for it.

I have various fluval canisters(305/405/fx5) and I have used biomax, matrix, and substrat pro in my canisters at one point or another and I honestly think its a matter of preference. Some people are loyal to one or the other. I tried them to see if one was "better" than the others and I can't really tell them apart once their in the filter and its running.
