i have a 300 litre tank with an aqua one aquis 1250.
i think the tank is slightly overstocked so i was planning on adding another filter. i was thinking of a FX5 just because of all of the people i have heard using them.
would it be worth getting a FX5? or is there any other filters i should look at?

does anyone have the dimensions of a FX5 as the space under the tank is 315mm x 470mm x 609mm (WxDxH)

So would there be any point in getting another filter or is the aquis 1250 sufficient for a 300 litre tank?
What would be the step down from a FX5?

I swear by my FX5's But, really depends on your bio load, number fish, types etc. The 1250 might be ok but I can tell you from experience you can not really have too much filtration the more the better. Less cleaning etc. If you can swing a F5X I would do it you wont be disappointed.

100%!!! I have 2 and working another one... trying to make one right now actually with a DIY FX5 Hybrid RIO 2800ss/ HF12impeller. Attached to a 5gal bucket. Will be amking trays fro it soon.

But I got both of my FX5's used. 1 off of Craigslist for $50 and the other off of Ebay for $78, Shipped! it ended up needing a motor and that was $90... So stil not bad. YOu can get them NIB on ebay for around $190usd...

Or make one from a Good powerhead, 5gal bucket with lid and some Bio-media and Sponges...

An FX5 on what is basically an 80g tank. :duh: wow, really fail to see the logic in that.

I run an FX5 as the only filter on my 75 gallon tank. I have messy fish and the filter takes care of everything for me. water changes once a month and top offs once a week. 0 PPM pm ites and ates

how do you manage 0ppm nitrates with monthly water changes and messy fish?

All three baskets filled with bio filter I suppose. I test every week during the top offs. I also have a jungle of plants in there for the fish to hide in. I bet the plants do a decent job of using the ammonia before it gets turned into nitrate/ite. One corner of the tank gets direct sunlight and I do get a little algae there so there must still be something in the water.

If you want cheap bio media for the fx5, go to Menard's and pick up three of the white floor buffing pads. They keep them by the floor scrubbers that they have for rent. I got them for $5 each and made three disks from each pad. Stack three disks in each basket and you will have 0 empty space. I still get really good flow, enough to sway the plants and sweep the bottom of the tank.
