fx5 problems

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i used to have a similar problem when i ran pot scrubbies in all three baskets. it would shoot out bubbles and gurgle all the time. i finally got fed up and switched to ceramic media in all three baskets and its been perfect ever since and it flows like crazy.

when i was having problems, i also took the pump off, but there was nothing there. i think the problem could be with your pads. how about the foam around it? has it been cleaned lately?

when i close intake and output valves and pull them off some water over flows out of the male valve connector. and when i take the top off the water is always to the very brim, usually some over flows a bit... as for the blue polishing pad, i replace it often, but i may try discarding it all together this time.

yes i clean the outer pads every 3 weeks, i am not lazy when it come to my tank.. i was lazy on putting together a sump and i'm paying for it now ;) i am still going to rip it apart and like i was saying above, i think im going to ditch the blue polisher pad.

Did you cut the hoses (ribbed hose) to make a straight as possible route or is their a lot of slack in them?

It definately sounds like air is getting into the system. I had a smiliar problem, but it was due to the filter being clogged with too much debris, which doesn't sound like your problem. Make sure all the fittings are tight. Also try closing the intake and outtake tubes and holding it upside down to see if water drips out any where.

Ok. Do you vary the flow through the intake or the output with the valves?

It sounds like the polishing pad to me. Try discarding that and see what happends.

no i do not control the flow, the more the better.

ahaha It is funny you mentioned about the polishing pad. I took each tray out one at a time instead of removing it by the two orange tray holders. The trays with carbon held no water but the last tray with the polishing pad held water right to the brim... So it seems to me that it may be the polishing pad.. I will keep this thread updated and see what happens in a few days since this is when the problem occurs.

LOL, Yup, mine did that before. There is your problem. :)

I had the same problem with both my fx5s and the one in the aro tank stopped completely:WHOA::WHOA: not good when you got expensive fish, but anyway after a bit of research i found out i had followed the manufaturers instructions for how much media to place in each basket but it did the above, first thing i did was halve the media and put the thin white polishing pad in instead of the thick blue one and ive had no problems since, and ive got an rena xp3 which basically polishes the water, hope this helps.

cheers steve
