just fill the middle, you want to keep the foam becuase that the thing that will help u filter out the poop and all that

umm the basket are pretty big... but 3 box should be good.

Yea just leave the foam, i can't remember how many boxes it took me to fill it up, maybe 4-6 boxes i think..

Yah I put 4 boxes of ceramic rings in my lower 2 baskets and I filled the top basket with poly fill. I used the poly fill b/c the FX5 sponges make for lame particulate filtration. Use the poly fill to basicaly get 0 bypass mech filtration and it also makes for ok bio filtration.

u need 9 500 gram boxes of biomax to fill all 3 baskets.

each basket holds about 2 liters. one box of fluval biomax (500 grams) is 0.666666667 liters.

0.666666667 X 3 = 2.000000001

that's also the amount of biomax i bought for my FX5 and it all fit perfectly.

Usually if your filtration is fine for the size of the tank, your tank is to small and time to upgrade :)

Thanks for all the advise. Couple more things...

I just priced the Biomax. To save a little $$$, I think I might do a little of both. I plan on filling the bottom basket with Biomax. "Plastic Bioballs" in the middle basket. The top basket, I plan to use a shallow layer of Biomax with a large Media bag filled with "Fluval Zeo-Carb" mix. Does that sould like a solid plan???

Plastic Boiballs o.k. to use as well???

Don't use Zeocarb. Use straight carbon if anything. ZeoCarb removes ammonia which means the beneficial bacteria may starve.

Bioballs will work. There's so much room in the fx5 compartments to work with. One thing my pet supplier (owner) told me...can use legos. I did with my sump for the 265g, and it works great too. Bioballs can add up too as they are a bit pricey. You just need to fill in the space loosely to have the good bacteria to build up and thrive in....or scrubbie pads work too....

With my 125g, I tried using just the fx5. I want/need (ocd) to see all the plants in the tank sway. Didn't cut it. Right now I have the fx5, UV sterilizer, AC 110, and fluval U4 (submersible) all in it. Fishies are happy. Better to go a lil' overboard with the filtration...
