fx5?'s

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
will have to run down to the lfs and get some will bioballs work as well as ceramic rings or no? and if not how many rings will i need?

I have several FX5's running at the moment. The only time you run into flow problems with them at all is when you use additional pads...floss...foam... and the like in the center baskets. I clean mine every 6 weeks but to be honest they could go longer. These are all tanks in the 200 gallon and above range and are not lightly stocked.

mine is prolly somewhat over stocked but all fish are small and most are food.

any idea on how much or many rings will be needed or if bioballs are just as good?

Bio-balls are not a good idea. Not enough serface area for a cannister. The ceramic rings sold in bulk are your best bet. Ocean floor in Phoenix has a good assortment at fairly reasonable prices although not as good as the Socal LFS's. An FX5 a LOT of bio-media. Each center basket holds over 2 $5.00 bags of ceramic rings. On the plus side you wont be replacing it the way you would other types of media.

will have to run down there tomorrow little bit of a drive but not bad. another question off topic, my tiretrack eel has been breathing hard since i bought him but eats fine and swims all over no ill side effects could the filter be part of the issue?

I don't think so...but you might have an O2 issue to deal with. I like to run an additional air source on all of my cannister filtered tanks. I'n my case that's an air driven Hydro5 (shown below) but it can also be an air stone or wand. Low DO (desolved Oxyigen) is often a problem on heavilly stocked tanks with large cannisters.

i have a 5inch disc bubble stone in the tank

If you go with the Fluval media you'll need at least 3 boxes... I run 3 different types in mine, i run prefilter media in one, bio max in another and i can't remember what the heck is in the 3rd one. But it will take a hefty amount of media to fill that baby up..LOL

i grabbed 4 boxes 2 prefilter and two biomedia ran the prefilter in the top and middle and all the bio in the bottom seems to have cured the problem
