Hi mfk,

Quick question for those who have fx5 or fx6. When you first open the canister before you start cleaning anything, how dirty is it in there?

Are all the sponges filthy with ditritus and other junk? Are they completely brown? Are you media bags full of junk too?

Or is your sponges still somewhat clean looking, still see some white on the sponges ect.

I just did my cleaning, second time with this filter and even after 5 months it didn't seem that dirty at all. Wondering if that's just the norm or not.

My water is always very clear, like crystal clear. Even after 5 months of no filter cleaning.

Thanks.

Is that because you are very overstocked? What's causing them to get so dirty so fast?

Do you find your nitrates levels to be high?

In my opinion (no disrespect to anyone) it HAS to be because he's either overstocked or majorly overfeeds(of course dependent upon HOW LONG it's run between cleanings). Overfeeding is the biggest contributor to slimed up/caked sponges on any filter.

On another note, it's my sincere belief that our FX4/5/6's(I have all 3) don't usually clog as fast because they are true "circumference" filters, which makes them generally load more evenly over the long run.

In my opinion, It's really a superior design as you get WAY more surface area in a smaller package with which to evenly load and distribute the waste.

That said, Now of course it doesnt hold as much overall media as a 2262(I have one of those too), BUT the open circumference surface area for loading debris I would bet is on par with the first layer of solid mech media flowing upward through the 2262.

On a sidenote... I also run my cans 2-3 months between cleanings, but I also use multiple hob's to spread the load.

My opinion only, YMMV....

Just cleaned mine out last friday. The side sponges weren't as dirty as I thought they would be but that polishing pad on the bottom was CAKED. Only ran it for about a month. I think that should be a fairly good maintinance schedule for it.

I clean my FX6 every 2-3 months and its filthy. But, its to be expected as that tank is terribly overstocked and overfed.
