[Aqualoon]

It is sand substrate, been running both these filters on this tank with sand for years now. The new motor made this sound the instant it was plugged in. The only thing in this tank is 35 or so young tropheus (around 2") so nothing big enough to spit sand anywhere.

I received the new motor from Big Al's, they're in Canada but pretty much directly across the border from me so I get stuff in 2-3 days.

Sounds like something is in the pump chamber and the spinning impeller is hitting it. I would take it apart and verify that's it's not that. Could be anything like a bit of sand, or even a dead snail shell.
