Pool filter sand. Easy to find, cheap, and it is heavy.
Is that the kind you use? I used that exact one in the past in a 125 and idk if that caused it or what but I had an insane amount Brown algae growing all over the place. Someone told me it was due to the high level of silicates? Not sure. Any input?

Yep, exact brand.
To be perfectly honest with you I don't know what silicates are however I use this same brand in several tanks, well I did but ended up taking it all out as I prefer bare bottom, and I never had any algae problems. Did you have high lighting or were they on for a long time?

Yeah come to think of it the light was very bright. Not on to long though

It would seem as though I was likely correct about the sand being to light.
I would go with a dimmer light and see if you still get algae.

I’ve got a bunch of this, is this what your using?

Screenshot_20200318-215046_Amazon Shopping.jpgthis is what is in the tank currently and what I'm going to remove. Its WAY to fine. Like you can barely wave your hand and it kicks up like crazy and floats around. I think I'll switch the "peace river" which has the size of 1mm-2mm practically triple what the stuff is in the tank now. Even heavier than the sand I had In my last tank. (Which was made by the same people, called torpedo beach just different colors and sizes of grain/look I'm coming to now realise. Lol)

Ahh, good luck! Don’t wanna kill $1k in filters over couple hundred in sand...

it’s reasonably priced stuff as far a pet store gravel/sand goes....

Come to think of it.....what if I go bare bottom....I've never tried it before....but I've heard it's easier to keep clean....only issue is. Is I dont want to drain and flip it over to paint the bottom of the tank. Is there another idea/option if I were to go bare????

For sure. I'm going to pull the sand out tomorrow after work I think. I dont like the possiblity of that much damage to practically new filters you know?
