Gachua tankmate recommendations?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I Currently have a Varient that maxis out at 5" Its surposed to be one of the more aggresive of the Gachua varients, I have had no luck with anything that looks remotely Snakehead like. I have had no issue with Botia and currently have Botia Dario which is a great looking fish. Also active swimmers, Exo's etc, if you want to stick with an Asian type setup I would go with any of the smaller Barilus species. They look like small trout type fish, very active.

As stated before I would avoid large terriortorial Cichlids. you would get away with convicts, Firemouths etc but some of the larger types would be a problem as well as being a little to large for the tank aswell.

An alternative to cichlids would be Nandus of different types. these are not aggresive at all but are real predators, relitively small with huge mouths and stomachs.

I think you didn't read my post well, i said put a specie of the "SAME SIZE"...Its common sense can a 3 feet catfish fit a 50 gallon aquarium?

MMMM If you say so. Its also common sense a 6" specimen of 3/4 of those species you listed will outgrow his 12.5" wide tank in a few months. Not the best idea unless your one of those people who encourages people to get fish they will havta either kill or have the trouble of getting rid of once they cant look after it anymore. Either way not the smartest comment.

Yea the gachua is my first priority. So far its very peaceful, so what else can I tryout as tankmates?

please read first my reply well to avoid petty argument like this,I also suggested him to buy a larger tank, gachuas grow too and by that time his tankmates will realize that it is no food, it is his tankmate..This is just my personal opinion and I might be wrong

As of now we can't decide well because fishes change its temper/moods when it mature's..Bichirs maybe will do well and thier rockhard scales will protect them for sure, they just look soft but so hard that I had to have several stroke of my swiss knife to slit it's belly, clown knife fish also will be cool for him,

CKF's will get too big for my tank eventually =/. So what species of bichirs are good for a 48 inch long, 12.5 inch wide tank?

Fair enough. As i originally said snakheads are illegal here and i have never even seen one in person but i still read abit especially on this site and thought gachaus only got to 6-8" and so would be ok in his tank for life but i maybe thinking of another species. And if they only get that size then even in a bigger tank the fish you listed will eat it sometime down the track. I wasnt trying to flame, just to give him the right advice. Im happy to be corrected about it though as i dont know much about SH.

for my experience the p.senegalus and the palmas is the smallest, mines are very good tankmates they only eat small fiah that will fit in thier mouth, ive noticed that they are active at night, they only pick their own kind but i think they can't hurt each other because they have no sharp teeth, they locate food by thier barbels..

well mixing a predator with another predator might end up eating one another when it is hungry...the risk is always there...just keep it well fed...even humans will kill each other for food...my micropeltes wouldnt bother a single guppy when it is full,as I see snakeheads unlike cichlids don't kill because of territory, rather they kill them because they see it as food,,(this is my just own experience)as of now my 3 micropeltes at 16 inch live as if they are all brothers they stick together all of the time and even same specie have different personalities ....I have 2 bichirs and the other loves to eat guppies only but the other just eat pellets

mixing different species is a great challenge, you have to carefully read and observe..

remember thier lives lies on how you manage your tank..this is what i've learned
