WHy in the hell are some game fish illegal to have in an aquarium? I just got a largemouth bss and three bluegill. I get home happy with my catch, later to find out that they are illegal. So I can cook them and eat them, but they are illegal? I was just wondering if anyone had any idea of WHY?

Wish I knew
It may be because alot of people will put them in with regular aqauria fish and then when the bass pike ect ect gets to big the people release them back, and with doing that the bass ect could have got some type of parasite, bug, infection ect from the regular aqauria fish and then it could travel from the bass to the other natives and in reality kill an entire ecosystem of fish.

Thats just what I think the reason could be.

Not saying I dont keep natives,I just make sure I can properly house them first.

Not illegal to keep here in Missouri. I know quite a few who keep Native setups, even businesses. I know here you have a certain number you can keep in your possession whether alive or dead, just can't exceed that number.

Not illegal here in Minnesota as long as you buy them from a licensed seller.
Its illegal to take them from the wild and keep them.
We sell game fish at the LFS I work at.

i dont believe in keeping wild caught natives in a fish tank for the rest of their lives... they came from this huge lake with many more fish of their species and just get thrown in a tiny tank away from everything they are accustomed to.. i dont care how big your tank is... compared to a lake its nothing..

wait i netted a bunch of bluegill but they dont have any size restrictions down here in Ga.

Well by that logic our hobby shouldn't exist at all.
The fish that are legal to sell all come from the DNR hatcheries not out of the wild.

Just seems odd to me. I can undeerstandd if it is a "size limit" issue. Like if you catch you need to release, but in this case it is not the issue. They seem very happy or content. At least they are in water they can really see through lol, (the lake was kinda murky). I don't think it is right to house any fish wild or captive bred, but I do it anyway :( and I am sure "they" could give a damn about wether or not the fish was happy in the wild then stuffed into a tank.

i know the legal fish aren't from the lakes. i was just saying i dont support catching fish from their natural habitats and having them suffer in a tank for the rest of their lives.. now granted, most MFKers have the capacity and the will to keep the fish, but do you really think they are more happy in your tank and in the wild??

sorry if i upset anyone.. its just how my parents raised me and i really do believe wild animals should stay wild..

im sorry for hijacking your thread.. back to topic.. lol if ya discus my ethics.. pms work well

id have to agree with snake header on that one.. and you never know what else your transporting in the water..
