Game fish are illegal

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok here in san diego we see some aquarium kept fish in our local water but i think one of the big things that makes a huge difference, is in florida there is alot of flowing water, and up in the north east. here in socal all of our water impoundments are pretty much man made and just dont support alot of tropicals. our water impoundments are drinking water from the colorado. i think its the water exchange rate, just like in our tanks, more so then the climate. ive seen oscars in local lakes but never to survive or at least seen again. i actually caught an aro in the san diego river, and never seen another or heard of another. all of or fish are touched closly by man, like world record "fat" lmb that eat "stocked rainbow trout" during our harse winters! like they say,"only in cali"

WHy in the hell are some game fish illegal to have in an aquarium? I just got a largemouth bss and three bluegill. I get home happy with my catch, later to find out that they are illegal. So I can cook them and eat them, but they are illegal? I was just wondering if anyone had any idea of WHY?

I hope this helps a bit. I am guessing by your screen name (BlackwaterFL) that the "FL" may mean that you live in Florida. Below is what the FWC has to say about keeping "native" fish for the home aquarium.

What regulations apply to harvesting fish for home aquaria?--

Answer: The rules and regulations for recreational take and possession apply (see MyFWC.com/fishing/rules.html). You cannot be in possession, or your aquarium be in possession, of more than these limits, legal methods of collecting and license requirements also apply. You need a freshwater fishing license to take (defined as "taking, attempting to take, pursuing, hunting, molesting, capturing, or killing any freshwater fish, their nests or eggs, by any means, whether or not such actions result in obtaining possession of such freshwater fish or their nests or eggs.") Legal license exemptions are listed on our license site (an example would be kids under 16 years of age). You will also need to avoid taking Florida's endangered species. A list of them can be found at MyFWC.com/imperiledspecies/.

So basicly what I got from that, is that as long as you follow the laws regarding bag limits, size restrictions, and you have a fishing license, then you are ok to go ahead and keep native fish.

Link to the FWC site that this is on, when you click the link, this info should be on the top.

2008 Minnesota fishing regulations state that:

Transport of fish for display in a home aquarium is legal under the
following conditions:
– Game fish purchased from an authorized licensee transported with
the necessary documents (such as a sales receipt).
– Anglers 16 or under may transport legally caught largemouth bass,
smallmouth bass, yellow perch, rock bass, black crappie, white
crappie, bluegill, pumpkinseed, green sunfish, orange spotted
sunfish, and black, yellow, and brown bullhead. No more than
four of each species may be transported at any one time, and any
individual fish can be no longer than 10 inches.

Good post but read that first line carefully. Only uses the word TRANSPORT. As I mentioned, there are other laws that dictate keeping/maintaining them - and they don't fall under wildlife code, but as "harboring natural reasources".

its not illegal to take game fish in minnesota for aquarium use as long as the person doing so is 16 or under. species are restricted to smb, lmb, yellow perch, rock bass, black crappie, white crappie, sunfish and bull heads. had to check my cussin and i went and cought 2 smb,3sunnys and 4 bullheads you freaked me out.

But you guys are still missing that there are other restrictions rather than just one law. This is the US where laws often time contratict themselves.

Kind of like there is a speed limits. But at the same time if everyone is going 10 mph over it and you are going 5 mph under, you could be ticketed for "inhibiting the flow of traffic".
