Gandalf vs Dumbledore

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I like both characters a lot, and some people have raised some good points since I posted early on...

...BUT, as someone whose seen all the movies and read all the books for each, I can't put Dumbledore over Gandalf, especially because Dumbledore's powers seem to stem a lot from his artifacts and weapons and he manages to lose those or be defeated despite them in the series.

Plus, Gandalf was wise enough and good enough to resist the one ring when it was offered to him. Dumbledore would have taken it to become more powerful, as he seemed to do that with anything in the Harry Potter world that could offer him more power. Then he would be like a Gollum-version of Dumbledore... (Dobby? Dobby-dore?)

Yes, I probably should read the books. I've seen parts of the the movies... never really payed attention, though.

Still... you can't deny, Dumbledore's got style.

This is true, haha. For an old guy, Dumbledore does have some style. Definitely read the books though, I've read all the main books and am now working on the Silmarillion and I've gotta say that they're some of the best books I've read (which is saying a lot because I've read more than a few books, lol). Some of the terms might be a bit confusing at first if you're not familiar with LOTR, but in some editions of the books there's a glossary that explains all of the them.

yeah the man's got a lil style but gandalf's robe was like a pimp's robe! he's like the hugh hefner of wizards. lol. on a more serious note, you're a lil biased if you're rating them without even watching the entire movie, let alone read the books but sounds like you already know that. Good read. i'm sure you'll find time to fit them in

Oh no, I'm definitely biased. I cried like a spoiled little rich girl at random moments while reading the seventh book.

I was referring to what the portrait of Phineus Nigellus Black says in Order of the Phoenix after Dumbledore evades arrest.

crying to a book...
wow. movies yes but book?

Books contain more intricate detail, and capture the poignancy of emotion better than any movie ever could.

 I was exaggerating. My eyes got a little misty, but that was about it.

SPOILER! Don't read on if you plan to read HP.

I mean, when you follow a character around for seven books, share his joy and pain and fears and accomplishments, and then find out he's gonna die, and you're gonna see it happen, well, it kinda puts a damper on things.
