Gar for my 220?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Plecos and other algae eating fish are known for sucking on gars and other sedentary fish. Well known problem.

I don't feel that I was being a dick. Perhaps a little blunt, but you didn't seem to have taken the advice that was already given. Your just trying to justify getting the fish regardless of compatibility.

He was being nice.. He's just telling you the likely reality of the combo. and plecos are notoriouse for sucking the slime coat offa other fishes particularly common plecos.. gar are by no means "graceful swimmers" makeing them easy prey for a hungry pleco. alot of gar also rest on the bottom makeing the territorial plecos worse usually. I would also nix the PBass simply because they will outgrow that tank imo.

My pleco has never done that to any of my fish or tried... The gars in the video I posted above look fine is that the 10% that might work or what?

My pleco has never done that to any fish, and he gets on fine with my gar. Like I said they are the best of friends. If the pleco does start sucking on other fish then I will remove him but hes been a joy to keep. they have been known to do this yes, and have been known to affect gars and bichirs but that doesn't mean they all do it. Mine has been fine for a long while now.
Maybe it is because I keep my pleco in a large wide tank with lots of room for him to patrol. I have only had plecos suck onto fish in the past in smaller sized tanks. as it is more of a captive behaviour and not a wild one I guess it would be much less common in a larger tank.

I feed my gar live fish because its wild caught and thats all it knows, so I feed the gar 5 fish per week

What would you keep a Gar with in a 220?

They go well with anything too big to be seen as a snack. They prefere to have non aggressive tankmates because fish like cichlids will eat all the food and harass the gar. Gars aren't good at defending themselves and would rather swim away from a confrontation than attack. So cichlids tend to pick on gars. it's not a no though, just depends on the species and temprement of the cichlid. They go will with other peaceful predators like clown knives or bichirs. They occupy different areas too so they rarely will bump into eachother and if they do nothing would actually happen.

My tinfoil barbs go great with my gar, but they sometimes spook him with their fast movements. My Giant Gourami completely ignores the gars existance.
