gar going crazy

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My Gar loves his hiding places, he nestles in where the bunch of fake plants are, even with the lights out in a dark room. Also, try feeding him with the long plastic tongs. I put a small piece of shrimp or scallop on the end just so it hangs off the prongs, so the gar doesnt bite the tongs. Move it around near the back of his jaw and try to feed him like that. This is what IO have to do on a daily basis. It is like caring for an invalid but I have to do it for him.

i guess ill have to try that. but im still wandering why this is going on???

I have no idea what the issue is either. I am just going to deal with mine and make sure he gets on the "little" school bus every day.

thats a possibility. how do i know for sure? he looks healthy but their may be a slight cloudiness to his eyes but not real noticable. could this be something? if so what should i do? he has calmed down a bit lately but still does it occasionally. i think he ate last night also.

i think your gar going to be fine, sound like he is just spooke alittle bit, some gar tend to be
alittle jumpy if they feel vibration and try to swim away.

i want to think this is so but sometimes he will do it at night when their is nothing going on and nobody around. then on the other note...he will also do it when im watching him. could he be "claustrophobic" or something and just get freaked out sometimes? do fish do that? i dont think the tank is too small. it's a standard 75 gal.

it's a 13" florida gar.

ive added some more top water plants to the tank and lowered the water level by about an inch and so far he seems to be better! hopefully he doesnt start doing it again. thank you guys for all the help! BTW he is also eating normal again!
