gar going crazy

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
no i havent but i just read someone elses thread about a pleco hurting the gar. you were right about that! ive been watching him closely though.

does this make sense??? i removed all my filter elements from my filter box and hes been acting fine. then i put all of it back in and within 10 minutes of doing this he started to get uneasy and swam into the glass again. i then took it all out again and he is acting fine. im currently running the filter w/ none of the elements in it and he is acting normal again. should i try buying new filter elements and see what happens??? also what substrate do you guys recommend? ive seen some tanks w/ no substrate and others have sand. i currently have a gravel substrate.

That is weird....What type of filter is it and what type of filter medium?
Still take out the pleco......

its an aquaclear w/ the original sponge, carbon, and some biomax insert. the pleco is now in my 30. any suggestions on the substrate???

I wonder if there may have been a contaminate in the filtration material. This is a bit odd but not something I would be suprised about. Substrate is really not critical. I personally use just plain sand or a sand gravel mix but have had them on about everything

Good to hear the pleco is out of there.

i just noticed him acting up when i put the filtration back in, but im going to buy new tomorrow and see what happens. also should my gar tank be brackish because right now it is fresh and as far as i know it was in a fresh when i bought him?

Fresh is perfectly fine. While Lepisosteus gar can and will do fine in brackish it is not really their prefered habitat. This filter thing is interesting please do give an update of the fishes reaction to new filter material.

will do. Thanks
