Gar hybrid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Why are there not more of these Croc II's? We do not know nor shall ever know.. It was the work of one fish farm of which we have obtained some information from but then contact went totally silent and we never heard from them again. The farm as we later learned was destroyed in a Hurricane and the owner was never able to recover...

The individual whom created both these Croc I and Croc II hybrids never did say just how many of either he created when he did. He did however just say they where hybrids of "Alligator gar crossed with Spotted Shortnosed gar".. We always suspected Florida gar and never expected spotted.. DNA was conclusive on this though. DNA was also conclusive on the Croc I identity.. SO.... so much for that.... Detail will be provided in time as that is ongoing...

On how do you get a job researching gars? You don't really.... you just focus yourself and do it.. You do not normally get paid for it as a Job. Rather you pay to do it.. Or find by any means a way to scrounge what little you can to do it... A lot of work and study is just a minor understatement... It is a constant struggle on a massive scale of time, attention, Seriously hard work.... networking, Grant writing, and most of all LUCK.... Never want to discourage anyone but know that this field is one that is very demanding of most anything.

I'm surprised that you guys haven't tried to make some more of them, e.g. "bucket babies," or has that been tried already?

not at liberty to discuss that....
Not gonna lie, this brings a smile to my face :). I dont know if its a legit :) or just a hopeful one but it will remain for awhile :)

Now if i could just convince you guys to make a medius or 100. :D

LMAO

Doesn't surprise me at all that you guys might have produced some after your birthday thread (although those weren't hybrids).

inconclusive. being looked at.

plenty more work on all fronts, and i'm glad richard chimed in with the story on the Croc II and i'll reiterate/give my take on the gar research stuff when i get the chance...currently the whole "gar research" thing is taking up 130% of my time...of course i manage to alter time-space a bit to show up here on occasion in the past week.

back to grading my students' term research papers...7/11 which are based on gar projects (coincidence???) also, it's kind of a unique group in that they got to work with Cuban and spotted gars...not many similar courses can claim that!--

Wait, what? My original guess from back then as well as what you thought they were at the time might be incorrect?

What did you guys do; mix a bunch of gar milt from a few species/hybrid(s) in a bucket of eggs to see what happened?

And so the waiting game begins, I guess.

Wow. This all seems very "breaking news"-ey. I didnt realize people were still actively studying and researching in this area. I'm just a young med student with 5 fish tanks at this point...Hopefully someday I'll be able to get my foot into this field. I can truly say that Ichthyology is a growing passion of mine. So thanks for all the info you guys. I'm sorry for being so...naive on such matters. I appreciate you all not being all down on me about it...

Btw.. and sorry for my lack of knowledge on this...but who is Solomon on here?

Really it's just Richard (Pejelajarto) and Solomon (E_americanus) that are actively researching gars at this time; to my knowledge, there is at least one other person on MFK who has a boss that study gars as well (that'd be FLESHY).

Btw.. and sorry for my lack of knowledge on this...but who is Solomon on here?

Solomon is E_americanus.
