shortnose, it's the only gar that can be id'd by it's yellowish colour.

I had a florida gar once that was much more yellow than that. Color is generally a bad trait to ID by.

Is it because of the position of the anal fin in relation to the caudal peduncle?

The area where the anal fin transitions into the caudal peduncle is much more steep on the Atractosteus genus. From there it should be easy to narrow it down.

jordan for mod! okay could we keep this to one ID at a time. kara could you give another clue to the "yellow gar"?

sweet, was my reason a valid one?

yep with the skittish part...as for coloration, as it seems we are all finding out, you can't account for that. Looking at the 4 gar below (one being the longnose already posted) if you go merely by looks, you can't ID them, and in these cases, the longnose and the Florida are very much different (pattern wise). Also, sorry for the crappy pics...they are blown up a bit in size.

I'm going to wait a little longer on the yellowish gar. My point of the 4 gar just posted to merely to show how pattern cannot tell species. If you want to guess these ones, go ahead, but I'll let you know what was posted in a bit but I do have a point!
