Also recent view of the pond, and a shot of the brand new (just built this weekend) pergola over my deck, which will make sitting and watching the GAR pond that much nicer.

:D

Agree

looking good Conner! looks like the spotted is putting on more weight too, which is good.

xander - those orange fishes are also feeding the gars though...and will be part of the driving force to their growing a good amount and likely adding to the vivid coloration fish tend to take on when kept outdoors and under more "natural" conditions than our typical glass and plastic boxes :) --

Don't worry, they're slowly decreasing in number, while the gar get a little fatter each day ;)

Yah, the spotted is looking better since he went into the pond. They've both darkened up considerably in coloring, and the shortnose has developed the very strong angled stripes down his/her flanks.

They are both coming out in the open more often, so they seem to have gotten comfortable in the pond. I've also seen them actively stalking the comets, although they don't seem to have a very high success rate during the day. I'd guess they're doing most of their feeding either at dusk or just after dark.

I think I might add another group of feeders to the pond. Some smaller comets, that won't be in such good shape and will be easier to catch.

I'm most likely going to be moving the other two shorties out there sometime this week. I've been meaning to do it before now, but I've just been so busy with projects that I haven't had the time.

I was also thinking about moving the Florida gars out there as well, what do you guys think? :naughty:

i'd go for it with the FL gar too Conner...you should see some nice growth and coloration develop on all your gars that you put out there. just be wary of any threats to the pond/fishes...sounded like everything was pretty well under control though.

as for hunting times...gars, like many other fishes are crepuscular hunters, which means, like you guessed, they are hunting most actively during dawn and dusk...the lower-light periods of the day. they will also feed at night, but also use night for greater movement (distances traveled in most cases) in the wild.

in the wild, mid-day gars are usually staying in generally one place/area--
