very nice!!

Very nice indeed.

Nice spotted gar! It's snout's definitely much longer than that of a florida gar...

i'd go for it with the FL gar too Conner...you should see some nice growth and coloration develop on all your gars that you put out there. just be wary of any threats to the pond/fishes...sounded like everything was pretty well under control though.

as for hunting times...gars, like many other fishes are crepuscular hunters, which means, like you guessed, they are hunting most actively during dawn and dusk...the lower-light periods of the day. they will also feed at night, but also use night for greater movement (distances traveled in most cases) in the wild.

in the wild, mid-day gars are usually staying in generally one place/area--

Cool, I think I'll go ahead and add them all. Maybe the two shortnose tonight, and then the two florida later in the week. We'll see how things go.

As far as predators, there's nothing out there that is willing to brave my two dogs to get near the pond, besides some sparrows and cardinals. I have 6 foot privacy fence surrounding the whole yard, and the dogs are outside enough that they scare most anything away. I haven't seen a possum in about 3 years, since I got my second dog :grinno:.

I may add some netting across the pond though, now that I have the pergola to attach it to on the house side of the pond.

I thought it was interesting that I've been seeing the gar actively following the comets in the morning and evening, but still during daylight. I'm glad they're becoming more active during the day so that I get to see them more often.

Oh, and the dogs are sissies when it comes to water. They're both afraid of anything larger than a mud puddle :screwy:. The worst they do is drink out of the pond and try to eat any floating pellets that get too close to the edge.

Very envious of your gar pond...!
