Thanks everyone! Its taken a while, but the pond is finally getting to the point where I always envisioned it being when I started.
There is a surface skimmer that feeds a 3,500gph pump. The pump sends the water through a ~300g, gravel bed bog filter, which is full of plants. The skimmer mechanically filters the water, the gravel mechanically and biologically filters the water, and the plants roots suck extra nutrients (i.e. nitrates) out of the water. The waterfall mostly just adds oxygenation before the water is returned to the pond.
